For my last project as a video creator for ColourArte, I decided to showcase my love for stencils and used them with almost every products the brand has.

I work in layers, always. Some you will never know existed when you look at the finished painting. But for this specific one, I wanted them all to be visible and using ColourArte’s product with stencils gave me that freedom of movement and choices.

I love using gesso as my first layer, it add grit to the surface so I am sure the product will adhere to it. As you can see, I like to leave some blank space so the wood still show through, it adds a really nice interest with the sprays reacting differently on gesso than on naked wood.

I love this big stencil from Donna Downey (scroll down for the list of supplies I used in this project) and it was perfect for my 8×10″ wood panel.

I am getting back more often into the safe place that is my art journal. This is why I decided to take you with me while I let a Nixie come to life, for this video project for ColourArte.

I have several art journals within which I work and for this video, I picked my Dylusions square one (my current go-to journal).

Art journal to me is where I unburden myself, where I experiment and just let happen whatever wants to come forward. I accepted long ago that this is my process and forcing myself to have a plan was doing no good.

I have to admit that I used a bit of every line of ColourArte products in this page. It’s just because I love them so… it’s what usually happens. The Primary Elements are maybe my favorite (sssshh) because I can make so many different things with these pigment powders.

I let the colors and the face that appeared guide me. It is usually hard for me to convey what is going when a Nixie is coming to the surface because words are not enough. I just see the face in my mind’s eye and let it come forward. Sounds weird, probably, but this is the best way to describe the processus. I go with the flow and learned not to second guess myself too much even when things go in strange direction like what happened with her eye.

Today I share with you a quick from start to finish video of this Nixie. I wanted to play with texture and use supplies I have but tend to forget about and therefore rarely use (this is the thing with being a recovering art/craft supply hoarder…).

Texture can be added in the first stages of a painting and/or layered as the process goes. This time, I went for a texture background thanks to gesso and stencils.

I loved using the Gelatos, from Faber-Castell, as the main source of color for this Nixie. I am falling in love with graphite and this gigantic graphite pencil, without wood nor anything, is just perfect for me (made me think of the big watersoluble graphite pencils by Lyra).

My Big Brushes felt unloved, unfortunately, but it felt so good to use them again ! They are made with india ink, which makes them permanent once dry. And this is something important to be considered when you work in layers.

I am in love with how this project for ColourArte turned out !

I used one of the beautiful glass ornament and altered it with canvas dipped in Paverpol, which is a fabric hardener (remember my other project with it ?).

I wanted this ornament to act as a reminder for me to stay open to what wants to happen, even all those things that seem crazy or too big.

The compass is one of my personal symbol, so I decided to use it for this piece, as well as wood veneers and a quote band from Tim Holtz that has a powerful message I needed to hear at this moment. It says

Remember to keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.

You’ll see how the Silks are incredibly smooth and blendable together. The canvas hardened with the Paverpol, that also acted as a glue to adhere it to the glass, gives a fantastic texture to the project (and you know me, everything needs texture one way or another).

This is an easy project you can easily get inspired by to create one with your own style and likings.
