And… we are on for a new color challenge over Lindy Stamp Gang ! You’ll see on the blog how different our projects are, all inspired by this amazing February color combo. As well, you’ll find ideas of colors to inspire you and are able to shop a kit directly *oh sweet*.

Oh My ! Sometimes, I do surprise myself with the crazy ideas that cross my mind (I often think of this quote from Alice In Wonderland: «Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.»)

For this month’s challenge, I decided to put to good use all these CDs we are not listening to anymore and alter them to create a fun banner.

First step was to cover them all with white gesso. I created texture while applying it with my Catalyst tool because well… texture is my dope 😉 *better than Nutella, eh !*.

Once completely dry, I sprayed colors (check at the end of my post for the complete list of the products I used for this project). I did not want for any mean to have an even coat of color.

I mixed Midnight RendezVous Raven in its Magical Mica form with a little bit of water, and using a Q-Tip, I made dots near the center. Then, I ran it around each disc to create a border of some sort.

On the two teal discs, I applied hot pink glitter mixed with glossy soft gel medium through a stencil. simply love how both colors complement each other, it’s this additional touch that makes the difference.

I blended some water with Cowabunga Copper Magical Mica and wrote «WELCOME» (this banner is hanging above the door of our guest room).

And as a final touch, I splattered some Teeth Chattering Teal on all of them. You can’t barely see it, you have to be in a certain position and certain light, which adds to the interest (to me).

At last, I had my husband drill me some holes, added a string and voilà 🙂 (yes… i am quirky that way and the letters are not aligned).

2014 is here… wow.

To start the year with our first Color Challenge, I wanted to work around my guiding word for 2014. I had several in mind, but the one came to me while talking and brainstorming about it with my Chéridoo, during a car ride (some of our best conversations actually happen when we are driving).

Aren’t these colors perfect for winter ? It screamed using our new set, Totally 80’s. Of course, it needed a touch of teal 😉

I used a 5×7” wood panel (because I can abuse it more than canvas, which I am always afraid to pierce somehow).

I apply a generous coat of gel medium all over the surface and then covered it with tissue paper. I wanted the first layer to be very textured so I crimpled it while adhering it, and then torn the edges so it would fit the panel’s size.

Once completely dry, I covered it all with Down The Rabbit Hole, and then used stencils with Bodalicious Blush and Gag Me With A Spoon Gray.

I then applied some extra heavy gesso through a scallop stencil on the right and left borders.

And because nothing is complete to me without a touch a blue or teal, I splattered some Time Travel Teal for a bit of contrast.

When everything was completly dry, I grabbed Midnight RendezVous Magical Mica to use as paint to write my word. Actually, this year my word is EXPANSION but the verb works too 😉

I used my waterbrush to write my word (previously lightly sketched to avoid bad surprises). And to make it pop, I outlined it with my white pen.

This month, I came back to my happy place: my art journal. I am almost at the end of this one (the big Dylusions one) which makes me very happy (because I love finishing a journal and starting a new one !).

If you’ve been following me, you know that spray+stencil are what utterly lift my spirit.

I started my page with a sketch made in bed, I sometimes do that yes (sketching while watching tv). I was feeling very heavy emotionally and this Nixie emerged:

I made some splatters of Tibetan Poppy Teal (take the sprayer part off from the bottle, and shake over your surface. Be careful, it’s unpredictable).

Then, I mixed some beautiful Autumn Maple Crimson Magical Mica (part of the Autumn Leaves collection) with heavy gloss gel medium. It creates a wonderful sparkly paste. I applied it through the Pomegranate stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop. I decided to use that to give her a whimsical body:

I sped up the drying time a bit with my heat gun. I did not apply it very thickly so I would not have to wait too long.

The spraying fun started after: I used one of my favorite stencil (I think it was from Studio Calico) and sprayed Flying Monkey Midnight through it and aside (it is one of my favorite Flat Fabio color, one without the shimmer).
After that, I picked I’m Late I’m Late Slate (another Flat Fabio spray) to spray all over my spread, to bring everything together. It is a very subtle color so perfect for this purpose)
I used one of my favorite stencil, still from The Crafter’s Workshop, and sprayed the drops/tears with Tibetan Poppy Teal.

I am more of a Silver girl than a Gold one, I love our Cranberry Mist Burgundy color (part of the Holiday Wreath collection, now only available as shots… but you know what ? you can mix it up and put it in a spray bottle if you want)because of its beautiful strong silver sparkle, it goes so perfectly with the Flying Monkey Midnight and Tibetan Poppy Teal colors…

I worked on my Nixie’s face with Neocolor II (watersoluble crayons from Caran d’Ache) and white acrylic paint. I wanted her hair to pop, so I used Poinsettia Red Gold Starburst Shot (part of the Holiday Wreath collection as well, with touched of the Tibetan Poppy Teal shot to highlight it. Look at this gold shimmer !

I wrote her messages («Let this Sad Heavy Heart teach you» and a quote from Albert Camus saying «In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.»)

Done !

I am so excited but also so so nervous to talk to you guys about this new series of paintings I started… Something like this has been on my mind for a while, but I got the needed push when I watched the final video from Micki Wilde in her latest class, Wilde & Free.

What a good opportunity to have Lindy Stamp Gang’s October challenge* here to actually start making the first painting of the series.

How sweet is that ? and fun, too. Because it is not always easy to start creating something when you have guidelines.

We (the Design Team members) creating something for you, so you can have an idea of the huge range of possibilities. We also list the products we use so you can have a starting point.

Her name is Abigail. I created her on a 10×8” canvas board, and I think I will stick to this size for all of the Nixies in this series. It is titled «Pieces of Me» (I explained the why of this series in a seperate blogpost).

I had so much fun creating the background with my LSG’ Starburst sprays (the shimmery kind). It is bright green (and… well, green is not my usual go-to color, but the two I’ve used, I love: Bells Of Ireland Green and Rusty Lantern Lime). The drops of Canna Lily Burnt Orange is then added for contrast (and Abigail’s hair color remind you of this little background touch).

I love using the Color Shots (these are the same than the Starburst sprays but in a wide mouth jar) when I need a quick coloring, without the mess that spraying can be. This is what I used to color my wood veneer embellishments, you’ll see how quick and easy it is in the video.
I also used embossing powder for her headband’s feathers, two coats made the trick (I am still learning tricks about using embossing powders, and my Versamark ink is now old so it does not help to get it right). Look at that gorgeous purple (it’s the Midnight Violet Obsidian)

I adore the Magical Micas for plenty of different reasons. One of them is that I can add them to gels and other mediums to tint them. This is what I did to create these dark parts on the background. However, next time I will activate the Magical with a tid bit of water first, and then add it to the gel so I am sure to get its true color (and potential).
I used two different Magicals to add a bit of contrast and interest in her hair as well.

Abigail lived during the late XVIIth century. She was raised learning the power of plants, and gems, so she could help people. She was known in her village for her kindness and selflessness; she would come by your bedside at any time of day and night if you needed her. Abigail always had the right words to reassure people, seeing the best in the darkness.

She had a beautiful companion, Raven. They were the bestest of friends, and it was not unusual to cross Abigail in the street with the bird on her shoulder, looking like they were talking to each other (which they were). Raven always knew where to find what she needed so she could gather it, and take care of it as it should.

Some would call her «Witch», frowning at her in the street, even some them were doing the sign of the Cross, thinking they needed protection.

Abigail is the sweetest young woman of all, giving her all for others, never asking for anything in return. But she was the fruit of misunderstanding and fear, and gave her life because of it…
